One consequence is that mountain blocks are often bounded by fault scarps and flexure slopes that descend in step formation to the adjacent lowlands. The country’s geography, characterized by high mountain peaks and deep valleys as well as by small isolated islands, has fostered the development of various dialects throughout the archipelago. Different dialects are often mutually unintelligible; the speakers of the Kagoshima dialect of Kyushu are not understood by the majority of the people of the main island of Honshu. Likewise, northern dialect speakers from such places as Aomori and Akita are not Missav – Mature understood by most people in metropolitan Tokyo or anywhere in western Japan. Japanese dialectologists agree that a major dialect boundary separates Okinawan dialects of the Ryukyu Islands from the rest of the mainland dialects.
Around the same time, the Ainu people arrived by boat from Siberia. The Jomon and Ainu survived for thousands of years, hunting, fishing and gathering plants. Japan is an archipelago, or string of islands, on the eastern edge of Asia. There are four main islands – Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. Japan’s nearest mainland neighbours are the Siberian region of Russia in the north, and Korea and China farther south. Some of the notable ones are the Nansei Islands, which include the Ryukyu Islands and Okinawa, to the south of Kyushu.
- There are also regional and local rail passes offered by the various JR companies (such as the JR East Rail Pass), as well as by the subway and private rail companies.

Campsites are often located near onsen, which can be quite convenient. Do some groundwork before choosing where to go, the Japan Youth Hostel page is a good place to start. Many have curfews (and sometimes a lock-out period during the day when all guests must leave), and dorm rooms are often gender segregated. If you’re looking for an evening of food and drink in a relaxed traditional atmosphere, go to an izakaya (居酒屋, Japanese-style pub), easily identified by red lanterns with the character 酒 (“alcohol”) hanging out front.

And although everyone will experience conscious incompetence to some degree, some people can get through it quickly and some get trapped here for years. If you’re only going to buy one, I’d recommend the “Basic” book from the Dictionary of Japanese Grammar series. It is the best Japanese language reference book out there, in my opinion.
Assistance dogs are limited to guide dogs for blind people, hearing dogs for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, and mobility assistance dogs for people who have balance problems or other difficulties with standing or walking. They are accepted only if they have been professionally trained and certified by an organization recognized by the Japanese government. Trained service dogs must additionally display specified information and carry certain paperwork whenever they are in public. Emotional support animals and even service dogs trained for purposes other than helping people walk are treated as pets. Even dogs arriving from the few certified rabies-free places on Earth (e.g., Australia, New Zealand, or Hawaii) require at least 40 days’ notice to arrange a health inspection upon arrival.

This drive for success is exactly why Japan became an economic powerhouse in less than a century. It is not an especially comfortable option, but it is perfect for checking the next day’s train schedule, downloading pictures from your digital camera, writing home, and resting a bit.
